Its always nice to be where your stuff is...

Home again! It is always so sad to leave our family behind, but always so great to get back home where the routines exists (sometimes) and the laundry smells like us. After a long trip away from home, I always dream up all kinds of crazy projects to work on when I get home. This trip I was focused on our backyard (ugh), what i could make for dinner (the eternal question), christmas crafts (yay homemade!), and pintrest execution (seems to be going around the internet these days.)

The bad news: looks like, as always, I'm putting a little too much on my plate. or am I? the good news: I've already made some headway!

I was working on meal planning 1st, which happen to go along with pinterest thanks to the gobs of amazing looking recipes posted by the second. Here is a jpeg of the meal planner i half made/half borrowed from a word template.

Here is a jpeg of this week's menus. Feel free to borrow. Oh, and recipes and critiques to follow!
The backyard has also been weighing on my mind lately. We have a very tiny, very pathetic yard. Its about 20x20ft and a train wreck. More about that in a later post, BUT I was working back there to create a family friendly space before I left. So i got to obsess create a plan of action while i was away. Here is to hoping to get the ground tilled over the weekend and plant grass the following week. then we wait. speaking of waiting, i made things grow already! never thought i was one for a green thumb, but there it is...

While in Houston I did manage to work on a trip mini album a bit. Over on The Sampler's blog i posted the beginning of the album. Swing by and check it out what's up so far! Its also the 1st of the month so that means its REVEAL DAY! August is "All Gussied Up" and amazing!

Ok, enough blogging and time to get life back to normal. Have a great wednesday!

actual photos AND a challenged!!!

Hey! I finally have some photos of a couple things i've made in the past few days. I really do need to get better at taking photos of my stuff again. a lot goes out, but pratically nothing gets posted. anywho, photos!!!

Last year's pumpkin carving. something i'm really looking forward to again this year! well, the pumpkins were neat, but roasting the pumpkin seeds afterwards was awesome!

This is a layout about a goat. really. thats all. i have no idea what this goat represents other than it was part of my family's farm at some point in time.
just because i've had a couple people as about it, i made the flowers with a 10 seconds studio mold, cut the flowers out and inked with rust, espresso, and butterscotch alcohol inks. i also did the crystals in the background with butterscotch and meadow alcohol inks. OH! and those stitches and that peak of a doily are new from hambly. I already know the stitches are going to make it into the debut kit for The Sampler. Anywho....
btw, i did these as samples for the 1st challenge at SBSRUS. Check it out!

Dont forget, the DT call is still open and rockin&rollin, so if you havent checked out yet, head HERE and get to work!!!

ok, i think its stew for dinner so i need to get to work on that now. its gloomy and fabulous here. yes, it is possible to get sick of the sun sometimes. i plan to take full advantage of this rainy day. hope everyone is enjoying their day as much as i plan to...

little bo peep DIY extremist?

maybe not, but this sheepherding bride was awesome enough to use wool from one of her own sheep to create a truely original wedding gown. idk that i would get married in it. its a little warm in these parts for an all wool gown, but it is certainly memorable.

mini album mania?

just about.

I've been so super busy working on samples for memories live on and samples/product reviews for scrapbooking supplies R US's blog (SBSRUS) (none of which have been posted, but all in good time) that i have totally neglected sharing anything here. i'm awesome, what can i say? i have had the privilage of recreating Irene Tan's (aka. Scrapperlicious) work for SBSRUS and having a blast! she has definately expanded my inking and distressing horizons. so much so that i recently created this little sample book built upon clear scrap's mini deco acrylic album. it doesnt have any photos atm, but soon...

**i'm not sure if you guys are having trouble viewing all of the imgs, but i tried to fix them and its still not working. sorry about that. hopefully i can get them uploaded into a new gallery and attach that to this blog finally.

this to that?

how cool is THIS(to that)?!?!?! i mean, i feel like i know a bit about adhesives from working for sherwin williams to trying to decorate anything that will sit still long enough. but, really. i love generators like this. knowing how to make things stick to other things is much more relevant than knowing what sarah palin would name you as her child

**update: apparently i was adding that blog to my feeds as i was in the process of typing out this update. whoops. fixed now. its nothing about weddings. promise.

new favorite stamp!

i have fallen in love with this butterfly stamp from hero arts! i submitted this card for hero arts challenge this week using favorite hero arts stamps. the flourish is embossed in a grey powder with paper layered on top and the two "heart winged butterfly"s are stamped in brillance white on elephant bazzill. saving this one for a wedding card. the inside reads "wishing you a beautiful journey together". :)

super simple valentines cards!

these cards are super simple. a blank card, the hero arts designblock: flourish stamp, clear embossing ink, a clear/glitter embossing powder, a 1x4" strip of contrasting cardstock, and a black pen. simply stamp and emboss your flourish, attach your journaling stril of cardstock, write your message, attach a rhinestone for good measure and VIOLA! you have a super simple valentine for someone special.

the inside reads "... love slave?". yea i know, i stole it off a papyrus card i saw at target a while back, but it was cute!
ok, now i have to get these bad boys in the mail. YIKES!

fanboy alert: MARAH JOHNSON!

i think i might have a crush on Marah Johnson. not as creepy as it sounds, mostly, but i think she's my favorite "scrapbook person" that i've met to date.

earlier this week, Vivian from Memories Live On asked if i wanted to join the class that Marah would be teaching this weekend. hey, why not? i'm not really the kid that takes a lot of classes, but it was something to do and the sample intrigued me and i accepted her gracious offer.

1st off, Marah was NOT what i expected. from the other class samples i have seen of her's i didnt expect such a spit fire. (dont judge a book by its cover, right?!) she used the word ARTIST, which i love more than anything. she really is an artist and is amazingly creative. but thats me getting ahead of myself. while i do think that everything she has created is beautiful, most of it wasnt exactly "up my alley". before the class, i checked out her blog a touch, but just a couple posts. i didnt look into her lines with creative imagination. about half way through her class and listening to what she was about a bit, it dawned on me that she was the one who made some of my favorite transparencies EVAR! (and the line that goes with it)

so much my favorite, that its in its own special folder and still unused. maybe i will use it this week in honor or meeting her...

anywho, so here is what we did today. or at least the front of it.

i really like it and had loads of fun making it. (the ultimate personal goal when i'm teaching a class is for my students to have a good time!) i'm going to work on it a bit more. get some photos and recipes in it. and then i think i will leave it off at memories live on for a few months to inspire others. feel free to stop by and check it out!!! (well, give me a few days 1st...) will post the inside before i take it to the store now that i think about it. anywho... lata!

skipping some small things...

but sticking out a super cold! hooray. erm. ok. anywho, so stuffy and weak, but not tired. i want to do stuff. i've knitted all day and did some light cleaning, but i know this cold is a direct result of sleeping 2-4hours each night for over two weeks. half insomnia and half just me working on projects. so, i learned my lesson and have been trying to catch up on sleep. i got naps this afternoon, but i've been sleeping in the spare bedroom, which isnt a horrible bed, but its not like sleeping my bed. BUT, i've been avoiding that because i dont want to breath sickness all over husband and child. i think tonight i might just crash out on the couch whilst watching harry potter. my favorite pass time.

anywho, i have super fun stuff coming up. we're having a valentines cookie decorating party with some of the boy's friends. i have a bit of an icing delima. i cant decide what to use. i have a recipe for "sugar cookie" frosting, but it takes a long time to set which might prove to be entirely too much of a mess for 3 toddlers. so, here is a poll. need helps! let me know!!!

i was also planning on making valentines cupcakes to send with husband to work. because thats how i roll. i was seeking a super yum chocolate cupcake with a thick chocolate frosting with candy cane hearts on top!!! i have loads of mini candy canes let, so how could i not?

anywho, i think i will clean off the bar a little. not exactly a high impact chore but will make me feel better. i need to save my energy to do the dishes tomorrow. woots.

i bought myself a new tool tote today!

well, i ordered it. i'm tote-ally sick of my tote ally (not) cool tote. today i was buying a rake at the local hardware store and i stumbled into the tool box isle. you never know where you're going to find inspiration. well, i was inspired. i came home and browsed the internet until i fell in love with the possibilities of this guy! so many pockets. so much space. i can carry my tape gun. and my paper trimmer... and my cropadile... and 11 pairs of scissors.... and 14 glue sticks... and 9 small dogs... and 22 staplers... my entire collection of ink pads... 10 different sized acrylic blocks...

*voice trails and holly* wanders off into the sunset with her new tool caddy*

Tasty Tuesday!

For this week's tasty tuesday (as requested and in honor of the 10 sugar pumpkins i have waiting for me to process in to puree) here are my punkin recipes from when i made a punkin pie. Kinda. I have a tendency to tweek things here and there. You know, add an extra pinch of this, a smidge of that, exclude this other thing because I forgot it at the store. In other words, don't be afraid to make these recipes your own. My tweeks worked out for me.You get the idea. Anywho, these are the recipes I used. I know I found them at 3 different sites and I have no idea where I found them since I copy all my recipes into word docs with out links. I win! Sorry to the people who took the time to post these things on the internet in the 1st place. The recipes are GREAT and the advice is solid! If YOU happen to know where I found any of these, leave me a comment with the link and I will update the references! On to the PIE!

Selecting the Pumpkin
When selecting a pumpkin for making a pie, be sure to choose a small pumpkin that is a variety specifically grown for eating, such as sugar, cheese, or milk pumpkins. They may also be called pie pumpkins and generally weigh from 2 to 4 pounds. Do not select the Jack-O-Lantern variety, which is not as sweet and has flesh that is tough and stringy. Select one that has good orange coloring and is heavy for its size. It should be firm, free of blemishes and have its stem intact. Pie pumpkins will yield approximately 1 cup of puree per pound of pumpkin.
Once the pumpkin has been purchased, it can be stored in a cool, dry area for approximately a month. Do not store in temperatures below 50°F. Do not refrigerate fresh pumpkins or wrap in plastic.

Pumpkin Preparation
~Wash the exterior of the pumpkin with cool water to remove any dirt and debris from the outer surface.
~Remove the stem from the pumpkin and cut the pumpkin in half lengthwise.
~Scrape out the seeds and stringy fibers from the center of the pumpkin using a metal spoon. Discard the stringy fibers and if preferred, the seeds can be saved for roasting. (recipes to follow)
~Leave the pumpkin in halves or cut into quarters if desired.

Preparing Fresh Pumpkin Puree
~Preheat the oven to 350°F.
~Coat the cut surface of the pumpkin halves with vegetable oil. ~Place pumpkin halves cut side done in a roasting pan. Add 1 cup of water to the pan.
~Place the pumpkin in the preheated oven and bake for 60 to 90 minutes.
The pumpkin should be baked until the flesh is very tender. Poke with a fork to check for doneness.
Note: The pumpkin halves can also be cooked in the microwave. Place the halves in a microwave-safe dish, add 1 cup of water and cover. To fit properly in the microwave-safe dish, the halves may have to be cut into smaller pieces. Place in the microwave oven and cook on high for 15 minutes. Test for doneness by poking with a fork. If not completely tender, return to the microwave and continue to cook for 5 minute intervals, checking tenderness after each interval. Also note, i didnt do this....
~When the pumpkin has cooked to proper tenderness, remove from the oven and place on a cutting board or cooling rack. Allow to cool until it can be handled comfortably.
~Scrape the flesh out of the pumpkin halves and discard the skins. Place pumpkin flesh in a large bowl.
~Mash the pumpkin by hand using a potato masher. Mash until all the pumpkin is a smooth consistency.
~Another method that can be used to puree the pumpkin is to mix it with a hand mixer. A blender or food processor can also be used.
~Drain moisture from the puree by placing it in a sieve lined with paper towels or a double layer of coffee filters. Be sure the sieve is placed in a bowl to catch the liquid as it drains from the pureed pumpkin.
~Cover the puree with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator and allow puree to drain for at least 2 hours. Drain overnight if possible.
~After draining, the puree should be about the same consistency as commercially canned pumpkin.
~If the puree will not be used immediately, place it in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 24 hours. For longer storage, freeze the puree in measured quantities. Mark the container with the date, contents and quantity. Freeze up to 3 months.

Making Fresh Pumpkin Pie
The recipe below is for a traditional pumpkin pie. The pumpkin puree can also be used in any recipe calling for commercially canned pumpkin. A 15 oz. can of pumpkin is equal to 1 3/4 cups of pumpkin puree.
Traditional Pumpkin Pie
Ingredients:
1 single pie crust, 9 inch
1 1/2 c. pumpkin puree
1 1/2 c. heavy cream
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 c. light corn syrup
3 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
whipped cream for serving
Have the single 9 inch pie crust prepared and chilled. (recipe to follow) Preheat oven to 350°F.
~Combine flour in with the brown sugar and stir until they are evenly distributed.
~Add the brown sugar and flour mixture to the pumpkin puree and heavy cream. Beat until well blended.
~Add the salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Stir into pumpkin mixture.
~Add corn syrup and beat until well blended.
~Add the beaten eggs and vanilla to the mixture.
~Beat the eggs and vanilla into the mixture until thoroughly mixed.
~Pour pumpkin filling into the unbaked pie shell.
~Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes.
~Check after 30 minutes to see if it looks like the crust is going to brown too much. If so, place a piece of foil over the pie. Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes of baking time so crust will finish browning.
To check for doneness, insert the tip of a table knife in about 1 inch from the center of the pie. The knife will come out clean if the pie is done.
Or, gently shake the pie and if about an inch of the center jiggles a little, the pie is done. The center will set from the heat of the pie after it is removed from the oven. If more than just the center jiggles, continue to cook and check for doneness at 5 minute intervals.

When the pie is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely before serving. Serve with a spoonful of whipped cream on each slice.

TOTALLY AWESOME PIE CRUST RECIPE! (yes, thats what i saved it as...)

1 double crust
• 1 1/2 cups five roses all-purpose flour or any all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1/3 cup ice-cold water
~Mix Five Roses Flour, salt and baking powder together.
~Cut in shortening with two knives or pastry blender.
~Add ice cold water, a little at a time, using just enough to bind the mixture so the dough can be patted lightly to form a ball. HANDLE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.
~Form 2/3 of dough into a round disc and place on lightly floured board. Save remaining dough for top crust. Roll dough from center outward, with a light, even pressure, to form a circle 1/8 inch thick and an inch larger than the pie plate.
~Fold double and lift gently into pie plate. Unfold and fit loosely in place. DO NOT STRETCH.
~Trim edges, allowing 1/4 to 1/2 inch extra all around. Put in a generous amount of filling. Heap fruit filling in center because it will cook down during baking.
~Roll out top crust; fold double and cut slits or fancy design near center to allow steam to escape.
~Brush edges of bottom crust with water, fit top crust over filling and lightly press top edges together. Trim edges evenly and flute.
~Bake as directed for pie filling.

~Yield: One 9 inch double crust pie or two 9 inch single shells.
*Single Shell:.
~Use only 1/2 of dough for each single shell. Arrange bottom crust in pie pan as above.
~Press pastry to rim of pie plate; flute.
~Add filling. Bake as directed for filling.

for my 10" pie baker, i used pretty much all of the dough...

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds!

When roasting pumpkin seeds you need not worry about the type of pumpkin you're getting the seeds from. i think. what i mean to say is that you CAN use the seeds from a jack-o-lantern pumpkin and they'll be fine.

1 1/2 cups pumpkin seeds
2 teaspoons melted butter or oil (olive oil or vegetable oil work well) (i prefer olive oil)
salt to taste (i prefer kosher)
Options To Taste:
garlic powder
cayenne pepper
seasoning salt
Cajun seasoning blend

Preheat oven to 300° F.

While it's O.K. to leave some strings and pulp on your seeds (it adds flavor), clean off any major chunks. Toss pumpkin seeds in a bowl with the melted butter or oil and seasonings of your choice. Spread pumpkin seeds in a single layer on baking sheet. Bake for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.

enjoy the pumpkin tastiness! i'm working on a pumpkin muffin. i'll posts any successes! happy tasty tuesday!
